As a destination popular with Western tourists, many areas of Egypt have a reasonable standard of medical care, with hospitals and clinics in major cities and holiday resorts. Outside of these areas treatment options are basic, so it’s advisable to head to Cairo or the closest large city for medical attention. Ensure that you have suitable insurance in place which will cover the cost of repatriation for further treatment at home if necessary. It is advisable to visit a Travel clinic to get the necessary vaccines and advised before you travel.

The risk of terrorist attacks in Egypt is extremely high, and recent incidents have involved attacks on tourist locations. Avoid crowded places if you can, and be vigilant at all times, reporting anything you find suspicious. Generally, crime levels in Egypt are low, but theft, muggings and other attacks targeting tourists do occur. Keep your personal possessions in sight at all times, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or valuables. Use hotel safes if available. Avoid walking around after dark in unfamiliar places, and travel as part of a group. If you’re heading away from your hotel or resort, only do so as part of an organised tour.

Many people head to Egypt to take part in adventure sports such as diving, snorkelling, quad biking and more. Whatever activity you’re planning to do, ensure that you travel insurance covers it, and be aware that safety standards between organisers can vary significantly. Make bookings through you holiday or tour operator if possible rather than privately.

Destination Information for Egypt

These days, there are in essence two sides to Egypt. There’s Cairo, the capital and the river Nile, where medieval bazaars and sphinxes are in abundance. Then there’s the Egypt of the Red Sea coast, where sun-seekers and thrill-seekers head year after year for sunbathing and scuba diving. The high-quality tourist resorts, such as the popular Sharm el-Sheik, in this area are plentiful.

If you want to experience Egypt beyond the beaches, there’s plenty for you to see and do. If you’re interested in religion and history, there are a number of historic monasteries, such as the Red Sea Monasteries hidden in the cliffs of the Eastern desert. To truly understand the vastness of Egypt’s landscape, take a trip to the White Desert National Park in the West of the country. Here you’ll see some extraordinary geological sights such as Crystal Mountain, a large rock made entirely of quartz. You can sleep in the National Park, which makes for a welcome change from the bustling cities and packaged tourism you’ll find elsewhere. Cairo is the place to go for shopping, sightseeing, restaurants and more. From here you can join organised tours to more remote locations, and find out why Egypt is such a popular destination.

Regardless of whether you are visiting Egypt for the sandy beaches or the rich culture, your safety should always be a priority. As a result, it is recommended you receive the hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines before you travel. Additional vaccines may be required, depending on what activities you have planned for your trip, so book a consultation at a travel clinic for more information.
