Destination Information for Zambia

Almost a third of the land in Zambia is dedicated to these reserves. Zambia also boasts one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world, Victoria Falls, shared with neighbouring Zimbabwe. You can visit during the autumn harvest season of March to April, when the falls are at their fullest, and you will be awestruck by their power and by the stunning rainbows created by the water.

If you’re heading out on safari, it’s advisable to join an organised tour, although self-planned travel is possible too. You can travel by 4×4 or river safari, making your way in a canoe along the Zambezi River. There are plenty of good quality safari lodges and campsites available. The capital of Zambia is Lusaka. Visitors tend to come here for restaurants and nightlife, although there is not much in the way of sightseeing. The Soweto Market is huge, and you’ll find everything from clothing to food and medicine. You can also visit the botanical gardens at the Munda Wanga Environmental Park, a peaceful retreat in this noisy, dusty city.

Many people come to Zambia for the festival culture, and there are many religious and traditional festivals that take place throughout the year. Kazanga, taking place in Kaoma, central Zambia, has been celebrated for over 500 years, and is considered to be the oldest celebration of music, dance and other cultural practices.
