What are Measles, Mumps and Rubella?

Measles, Mumps and Rubella are extremely contagious viral infections that are spread through respiratory droplets that linger in the air caused by coughing or sneezing.

Measles

This virus is caused by Measles morbillivirus, characterised by a red, brown blotchy rash that starts at the hairline and works its way down the face, Torso, and Limbs approximately 14 days following exposure. Initial symptoms can develop 10 days following exposure such as a cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis.

Mumps

This virus is caused by the Paramyxoviridae virus that affects the epithelial cells of the nose and throat. This causes the idiosyncratic swelling of the salivary glands, located on both sides of your mouth, in front of your ears, that mumps is most known for. The Onset of symptoms usually occurs around 10 days following exposure.

Rubella

This virus is caused by Rubivirus Rubellae. Symptoms can start from 10-15 days following exposure that include fever, cold like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes of the neck, and a pink or pale red rash that begins on the face, and travels down towards the extremities

Knowing whether you’ve been vaccinated against, or have experienced previous illness with any of these viruses isn’t something most people know , but is useful for the aforementioned reasons. This blood test will help determine whether you have been exposed to any of these viruses in the past, or if you acquired protection via vaccination as a child.
