Brazil Launches Nationwide Dengue Fever Vaccination Campaign Amidst Soaring Cases

In response to a significant surge in dengue fever cases throughout the country in early 2024, Brazil has taken the lead by initiating a comprehensive national vaccination campaign against the disease.

With over one million reported cases of dengue in the initial two months of 2024, Brazil has witnessed a fourfold increase compared to the same period in 2023. This alarming rise is attributed, in part, to the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon, resulting in heightened rainfall across the nation. To combat the escalating crisis, Brazil has secured 5.2 million doses of the Qdenga dengue vaccine.

Dengue Hotspots in Brazil:

Six Brazilian states, alongside the Federal District, are grappling with dengue epidemics. The disease has now infiltrated 85% of Brazil’s municipalities, extending into regions previously untouched. Seventeen cities, including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, have declared a state of emergency.

Dengue fever is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which thrive in urban environments. Consequently, the risk of contracting dengue fever is particularly high in cities.

Travel Recommendations for Brazil:

Travellers heading to Brazil are advised to exercise extra caution and protect themselves from mosquito bites by using mosquito repellent. CityDoc Medical is offering the Qdenga vaccine against dengue fever. It recommends vaccination for individuals who have previously experienced dengue fever when travelling to Brazil. Those who have not had dengue fever should also consider vaccination. It’s important to note that Brazil is not the only location experiencing a surge in dengue cases; neighbouring Peru is grappling with an epidemic, while Bangladesh, Philippines, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam have all witnessed significant increases. Therefore, vaccination against dengue fever is also advisable for travellers visiting these areas.
