Reduce your travel self-isolation period

Test-to-Release Covid-19 Testing Official Government Provider

For Travellers Returning To The UK only

Reduce your travel self-isolation period with the UK government Test-to-Release programme

If you are returning to the UK from a country not on the government’s travel corridor list, you will need to self-isolate and not leave your home for a full 10 days. You can now reduce that time by taking a test from an approved provider. Citydoc and all of our partner laboratories are approved by the UK government for the Test-To-Release program.

Citydoc provides both in-clinic testing at our central London clinics at Moorgate and the Shard and also a home test option delivered via courier.

In-clinic tests are available;

  • Citydoc Moorgate, Monday – Sunday until 3pm
  • Citydoc Shard, Monday – Saturday until 3pm

Home tests are available for order through our website. Weekends – if your 5 day test date falls on a weekend, we DO NOT ADVISE you taking this test as you may not get the results in time to reduce your self-isolation. Of course, for peace of mind you may still wish to take a test.

1. Eligibility for Test-to-Release

* Due to the new South African variant ,travel from the following countries to the UK is currently banned. Zamibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Zambia, Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, Angola, Mauritius, Seychelles*

24 hours before the end of your trip, you should check whether the country you are returning from is on the government travel corridor list. This list changes frequently and without notice.

For in-clinic appointments (Recommended)

  1. You must only book your test for five full days from the moment you department your destination. For instance if you depart at 2:30pm, you cannot book an appointment before 2:30 on the fifth day. If you book an appointment for the wrong time, the UK government systems will deny your Test-to-Release test results.
  2. All appointments for Test-to-Release have to be completed by 3:00pm, or completed the following day. Tests after 3:00pm will not be processed until the following day.

If you meet this criteria, book your test-to-release kit from CityDoc. It is the sole responsibility of the traveller to confirm that they are eligible for Test-To-Release. Citydoc accept no liability for testing that doesn’t meed the government’s strict criteria.

2. Booking/Ordering your Test-to-Release

For in-clinic appointments, book online at either of our Central London clinics. The cost per test is £200. A £50 booking deposit secures your appointment.

2. How does Test-to-Release work?

Arrive: in England from a country not on the corridor list. Go straight to the place you plan to self-isolate. Start self-isolating according to the UK government’s instructions. Fill in the government passenger locator form

Day 5 (the count starts from zero the day you leave the origin country so if you arrive the same day you left, that is day zero and the next day is day 1): You should receive your test on this day, we are not allowed to send to you any sooner. Take your test as soon as it arrives.

Day 6: post your test

Day 7: your test arrives at the laboratory

Day 7 to 8: Get your results. If negative, you are to end self-isolation. If the result is positive you must remain in isolation for another 10 days (this count starts the day you took the test). People you are living with or staying with should also self-isolate for the extra 10 days regardless of their results.

FAQ about Government Test-to-Release

Where can I find more information about Test-to-Release?

See the government’s Test-to-Release page.

Can I use the government Test-to-Release if I have covid-19 symptoms?

If you have covid-19 symptoms, Test-to-Release is not suitable for you. Visit the NHS for the latest information about what to do if you are ill with covid-19.

How long will I have to self-isolate on return from a quarantine country?

If you do not have a negative covid-19 test result you will have to self-isolate for 10 days. When you are self-isolating you cannot leave your home for any reason. You will have to arrange deliveries for everything you need.

Under the government’s Test-to-Release programme you can on the fifth day after leaving the quarantine country (that is, not on the government’s travel corridor list) take a covid-19 test. If you get a negative result then you no longer have to self-isolate.

Can I get my test done sooner if I attend one of your clinics?

You need to wait five days from leaving a quarantine country before taking your sample for Test-to-Release.  In person Test-To-Release tests will be available at Citydoc Moorgate and Citydoc London Shard, Monday to Friday from December 29th. No Test to Release service is available in clinics at weekends. Note that you must go straight from the airport or port of arrival to the place where you will self-isolate and you cannot leave there except under some specific circumstances.

Can I leave my house once I’ve taken a Test-to-Release test?

You can only end self-isolation once you’ve received a negative covid-19 test result. Until you receive your result, you need to self-isolate.

Can I use Test-to-Release in Scotland and Wales?

Test-to-Release only applies to England. Scotland and Wales, as devolved nations, will make their own arrangements.

Do I need to isolate after my trip abroad?

If you are returning to England from one of the government’s travel corridor countries, you do not need to isolate. To find out if you are travelling from a travel corridor country, please check the list on It changes frequently and without notice, so check it immediately before you travel.

Do you have to pay for Test-to-Release?

The government test-to-release scheme is private. You have to pay for a test from a private provider, such as CityDoc, for this purpose.
