Fiji

Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands and 540 islets scattered over about 1,000,000 square miles, and is located in the South Pacific. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are Fiji's major islands, with the capital, Suva, located on Viti Levu. Fiji surrounds the Koro Sea about 1,300 miles (2,100 km) north of Auckland, New Zealand. The Fiji islands are largely the product of volcanic action, sedimentary deposit, and formations of coral. A jagged dividing range running from north to south has several peaks above 3,000 feet.

Fiji Destination Information

Much of Fiji’s shoreline is composed of reefs and rocks, with mangrove swamps found on eastern coasts. Almost half of Fiji’s total area remains forested, while dry grasslands are found in western areas of the large islands. At Suva the average summer high temperature is in the mid-80s F, and the average winter low is in the high 60s F. All Fiji islands receive the greatest amount of rainfall November through March, during which time hurricanes are also experienced perhaps once every two years. Whether it’s a romantic escape or family fun, Fiji has something for everybody, from trekking in lush rainforests or swimming in fish-filled lagoons, ride rapids, or trek rural roads. World-class surf waves can be found around the islands, or simply laze in a hammock on the beach and while away the hours.
