Common and rare side effects of the flu vaccine
The flu vaccine is generally safe, but like all vaccines, it can cause side effects. These are usually mild and short-lived.
- Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
- Mild fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Feeling slightly unwell for a day or two
Rare Side Effects
- High fever (above 38°C)
- Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, or breathing difficulties—extremely rare)
- Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) – A very rare condition that affects the nerves, occurring in about 1 in a million cases
- Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) – Extremely rare, but medical professionals are trained to handle it
If you experience severe symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Most people tolerate the flu vaccine well, and the benefits far outweigh the risks.
